FACULTY OF FINE ARTS AND DESIGN
Department of Visual Communication DesignA workshop led by Ege Canpolat with Özgur Demirci and Daniele Savasta and the students of the VCD302 Desıgn Studio IV Spring 2025. 5-8 May 2025
Phonoform is a conceptual framework and aesthetic methodology that investigates the manifestation, transformation and transduction of sound through and with form. A phonoform is not merely a sculpture or object but a system of translation in which sonic information is rearticulated as spatial, tactile, and visual structures. By considering sound as a material entity and integrating it with kinetic systems, the workshop positions sound sculpture as an artistic and performative investigation into how sound exists in space, interacts with physical structures and emerges through the actions of found objects.
The following topics were addressed in the theoretical infrastructure of the workshop:
• Art, science and technology intersection in history,
• Impressionism and futurism movement, kinetic art, kinetic sculptures, interactivity in art,
• Sound sculptures, cymatics and thinking through sound,
• Arduino basics and MIDI communication protocol
Participants were then designed and built a single collaborative kinetic sound sculpture through guided experimentation and collaboration, resulting in an exhibition on the final day.
